George F. Papenfuss (4 November 1903 – 8 December 1981) worked at the University of California, Berkeley, U.S.A. and became an advocate for phycology and international cooperation. Dr. Papenfuss was a founding member of the International Phycological Society and served as its President. This award honors his contributions to phycology by recognizing the best posters presented at the International Phycological Congress in each of several categories.
